Following its statement of intention to adopt the unitary patent (as discussed here), Italy has now formally requested participation in the unitary patent scheme in a letter to the Council of the European Union of 7 July 2015. Italy had already signed the UPC Agreement (which would have given the Unified Patent Court jurisdiction over the Italian designation of any classic European patent (i.e. bundle patent)). By requesting participation in the unitary patent too, Italy has now signed up in full to the patent reforms. Italian ratification of the UPC Agreement is still outstanding.
