The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) referred the anticipated acquisition by Silverline Tanks of Balmoral Tanks to the Competition Commission on 6 November 2007. The merger was found to give rise to a substantial lessening of competition in the market for glass fibre reinforced plastic tanks (used for storing potable water) where the parties were considered to have combined market shares of 40-60 per cent, representing an increase of 15-35 per cent. The OFT found that the undertakings proposed by Silverline Tanks were insufficient to deal with the competition concerns raised by the merger.
