As we previously wrote about here and here, a bill has been progressing through the New York Legislature to afford the protections of the New York State Human Rights Law to unpaid interns in the State of New York. Similar legislation took effect in New York City on June 14, 2014, extending the protections of the New York City Human Rights Law to paid and unpaid interns who work in the City. On July 22, 2014, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the state version into law, which took effect immediately. The New York State Human Rights Law will now protect unpaid interns, as well as employees, from unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
