Archer Daniels Midland Company, the Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC) and the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) have announced plans to cooperate on a CCS project involving the capture and storage of carbon dioxide from ADM's ethanol plant in Decatur, Illinois. The project is expected to inject up to 1 million tons of carbon dioxide into the Mount Simon Sandstone Formation over a period of three years, from an injection site on ADM’s property. The $84.3 million project will be funded by $66.7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy over a period of seven years, as well as co-funding from ADM and other corporate and state resources.

Injection well construction is expected to begin this spring. A one-year period of background monitoring will follow beginning in October. Actual injection is slated to begin in 2009.
