The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has issued a draft guideline regarding coverage on criminal investigation and has submitted this draft guideline to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DDPA). In order to track down suspects in a faster and more effective way, the PPS proposes, inter alia, to place most-wanted suspects’ lists on the internet. The DDPA has expressed its concerns about the powers to use media coverage in criminal investigations7. According to the DDPA’s recommendation, such measures will have a significant impact on the individuals involved, especially in view of the fact that information placed on the internet will never disappear from the worldwide web. In this particular regard, the DDPA recommends putting safeguards in place to offer sufficient protection (e.g. protection of such information from search engines).
