West Virginia regulators approved American Electric Power's 629 MW integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant, which is estimated to cost in excess of $2.23 billion. However, the plant still needs to gain approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission and an air permit from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection before construction can begin. AEP spokeswoman Melissa McHenry said, "We can continue to rely on West Virginia's and our nation's abundant coal resources as a generating fuel with fewer emissions and less impact on our environment."
