The winners of the Diversity Visa 2008 Lottery (DV-2008) have been announced. The diversity lottery makes 50,000 immigrant visas available annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Approximately 96,000 applicants have been registered and notified and may now apply for an immigrant visa. The government selects winners in excess of the annual quota since it is expected that not all of the individuals who registered will pursue their cases to visa issuance. The larger figure is meant to insure that all DV-2008 numbers will be used during fiscal year 2008 (October 1, 2007 until September 30, 2008).
Winners of the DV-2008 program were selected at random from over 6.4 million qualified entries received during the 60-day application period that ran from 12:00 AM on October 4, 2006, until midnight, December 3, 2006. Winners of the DV-2008 lottery are eligible to apply for an immigrant visa or adjustment of status until September 30, 2008. However, once the total number of visa numbers are used up for the fiscal year 2008 program, those who did not receive a visa will not benefit.
Those who are interested in applying for the DV-2009 lottery must apply electronically prior to 12:00 pm Eastern time on December 2, 2007. Information related to the DV-2009 lottery is available at dvlottery.state.gov.
