In her first speech on immigration, Home Secretary Theresa May announced the Coalition Government's plans to target those coming to the UK to study and to join family members here as part of their attempt to reduce net migration to the UK.

The temporary immigration limits that have been in place since 19 July 2010 affect only those coming to the UK to work via Tier 1 (General), for highly skilled workers, and Tier 2 (General), for new hires coming to the UK to do a skilled job. Students and families will be the next to be considered in the Government's agenda of reducing immigration.
