The OFT is currently consulting on the issues of how it should be prioritising its work and the method by which it should be calculating the benefits which its work brings consumers. The guidelines for how the OFT should prioritise projects and use its resources are aimed at ensuring that the regulator lives up to its pledge to the Treasury, to bring benefits to consumers and the economy which exceed the cost of running the body fivefold. Measuring the direct consumer benefits which come out of the work of the OFT is an important way for the watchdog to learn how well it is performing against this key target. The most tangible benefits to consumers of the work of the OFT include price reductions due to the elimination of cartels.
