Secretary Janet Napolitano announced her resignation from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), effective in September.  She’s headed to California to be President of the University of California school systems.

Her departure leaves a void at key positions over at DHS, including immigration related top leadership positions.  Leading some to wonder whether their is a leadership vaccum over at DHS.  For instance, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been operating with an acting commisioner for a few years now.  If Alejandro Mayorkas is selected to move up to the second top job at DHS, that means there will be a leadership void at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), where Mayorkas is currently the Director.  Mayorkas’ nomination was sent by the White House to Congress last month.  In the not too distant past, John Morton who heads Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announed his resignation.
