Maddocks senior associate Michael Zheng reports from on the ground as part of the Australian Blockchain Mission delegation in Shanghai on 17 September 2018. You can read Part 1 here.

The Wanxiang Global Blockchain Summit combined insights from a number of industry experts together with opportunities to meet new companies and discuss their blockchain projects.

After the initial training sessions and corporate visits, Days 4 and 5 of the mission were set aside for attending the Wanxiang Global Blockchain Summit. The event was organised by Wanxiang Blockchain Labs, a leading innovator in blockchain technology. There were almost 2000 attendees at the conference and most of the major blockchain companies from around the world were represented.

We heard from industry leaders, including Vitalik Buterin and our own Craig Dunn from Standards Australia and Sophie Gilder from CBA. The Australian delegation’s presence at the conference highlights the opportunity for Australia and China to further the adoption of blockchain technology together.

On Night 4, I attended a pitch session organised by Chinese investment company, JadeValue, and media company, Shared Finance, where Australian blockchain companies including AgriDigital, Civic Ledger and CastleCoin presented their projects to Chinese investment and venture capital companies. Before the pitch meetings, the Australian companies also participated in training sessions to understand the Chinese market and enhance their pitches to suit a Chinese audience. The room was packed with more than 100 Chinese attendees and many of the blockchain companies have followed up with those introductions.

The Australian Blockchain Mission to Shanghai has been a fantastic opportunity to connect with Chinese companies who are developing and investing in blockchain technology. We saw some amazing projects and advancements in the blockchain space and I’m really excited to see how the Australian delegates can work with the Chinese companies to enhance the industry in Australia.

I’d like to thank Austrade, the Australian Digital Commerce Association, Wanxiang and all of the delegates in the Australian Blockchain Mission for making this event the most productive, insightful and enjoyable week in my blockchain career.
