The US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) is considering putting Alberta's oil sands reserves on the same footing as conventional crude oil. Nearly three decades ago the SEC put rules in place to prevent companies from booking their bitumen resources as "proven crude reserves". The US Department of Energy recognised the oil sands as proven reserves nearly five years ago, but the SEC has not yet made a change.
