On March 8, 2013, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) published a new version of Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) in the Federal Register. Employers are encouraged to begin using the new version of the form immediately and will be required to use the new version beginning May 7, 2013.
How is the new form different?
- Form I-9 is now two pages
- Page 1 is completed by the employee (with or without the assistance of a preparer/translator) and page 2 is completed by the employer
- Expanded instructions
- New fields for e-mail address, phone number and foreign passport in Section 1
- Space for a 3-D barcode, presumably for future use by USCIS
