A General Medical Council Consultation paper seeks to revise existing guidance (Confidentiality: protecting and providing information [2004]), for doctors on the standards of conduct and ethics expected by patients.

Under the new guidance, GPs will be expected to report patients they consider unfit to drive to the DVLA. The changes are expected to improve road safety. Previously, doctors were advised to report drivers only where they considered them to be dangerous as opposed to unfit for reasons such as poor eyesight or risk of a fit/heart attack.

Other new changes include reporting of gunshot/knife wounds and disclosing information for insurance, employment and similar purposes.

The Consultation process closes on 28th November 2008.
