House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA) and Energy Subcommittee Chairman Doug Lamborn (R-CO) announced a number of hearings today that would address the slow pace of the Bureau of Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement's (BOEMRE) issuance of new drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico OCS. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and BOEMRE chief Michael Bromwich will both be called to testify. The hearings come in response to six Gulf Coast members' asking the committee's leaders to convene hearings, noting that only 32 permits for shallow water wells and no permits for deepwater wells have issued since the lifting of the moratoria on new OCS permits.
