The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced it has “put an end to a servicemember fee scam run by USA Discounters, Ltd., a company that operates a chain of retail stores near military bases and offers financing for purchases,” according to their press release. The CFPB found that USA Discounters “tricked thousands of servicemembers into paying fees” for services the company did not provide or for legal protections the servicemembers were already entitled to. USA Discounters will pay more than $350,000 in refunds plus an additional penalty of $50,000. CFPB Director Richard Cordray said of the action, “Targeting servicemembers with scams disguised as legal benefits is unconscionable, and we will not allow this injustice to continue.” For more, read the full release.
