Rail Safety National Law Application Act 2013

In May 2014, Victoria joined South Australia, NSW, Tasmania and the Northern Territory in becoming the fifth jurisdiction to join the national rail safety regulatory regime.  It is expected that all jurisdictions, other than Queensland, will be part of the national regime by the end of 2014.

The Rail Safety National Law Application Act 2013 came into effect on 19 May 2014 and replaces the Rail Safety Act 2006.

It should be noted that the Rail Safety Act 2006 will continue to operate as the Rail Safety (Local Operations) Act 2006 to cover Victoria’s light, tourist and heritage rail services not operating on the main line.
