On 10 February 2010, the European Commission confirmed it recently sent a Statement of Objections to several companies over their alleged involvement in a price-fixing cartel affecting the air freight forwarding industry. The unnamed firms have been under investigation by the Commission for some time in respect of four separate incidents involving the movement of freight from the UK to outside the EEA, from the EEA to the US, from China to the EEA and from Southern China/Hong Kong to the EEA. The Statement of Objections was drawn up on the basis of evidence collected during dawn raids carried out by the Commission in October 2007. At this stage of the proceedings, the companies concerned are given an opportunity to formally defend themselves against these allegations in writing and, if they request it, during an oral hearing prior to any final decision.
