On January 20, 2011, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) held a web conference to discuss the business portal of the consumer product safety database, Saferproducts.gov, scheduled to launch in March. The web conference addressed how manufacturers, private labelers, and importers can use the business portal to designate one or more individuals to receive and respond to reports of harm filed by consumers. It also addressed the process for registering and receiving these reports, as well as providing comments and/or designating specific information contained in a report of harm as confidential or materially inaccurate. Notably, the CPSC announced that on Monday, January 24, 2011, there would be a “soft launch” of Saferproducts.gov. This will allow users, both consumers and businesses, and CPSC staff to test the functionality of the database before the official launch in March. Any reports of harm received during the soft launch period will not be published when the database is officially launched but will be available through the current FOIA process. Manufacturers, private labelers or importers who wish to register for the business portal and participate in the “soft launch” period may do so by going to http://www.saferproducts.gov/ and clicking on the “Business Registration” link.
