U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) has announced a new version of the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form (“Form I-9”) to be used to verify the employment eligibility of new hires effective March 8, 2013. USCIS has given employers a 60-day grace period (or until May 7, 2013) to begin using the new form. Employers are not required to go back to use the new form for existing employees who have already completed a Form I-9. But any updates to existing Forms I-9 must be done on the new version.
The new Form I-9, dated 03/18/2013, looks very different from earlier versions due to substantial changes in formatting and the inclusion of three new data fields, including the new hire’s telephone number and email address. But in substance the new version will not require employers to change their processes in any way other than using the new version. The Form I-9 and instructions are available here.
