On 27 July the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) published an opinion on the reform ofEurope's data protection laws. The opinion sets out the EDPS's vision for the regulation of data protection, noting that 'the time is now to safeguard individuals fundamental rights and freedoms in the data driven society of the future.'

The Opinion sets out the proposed EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), alongside detailed recommendations from the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the EDPS. The EDPS has also launched an app for mobile devices which allows users to compare the detailed recommendations by each body.

The EDPS' views are mainly drawn from the European Parliament and the Council. The views of the EDPS favor practicality, but in other areas it adopts an approach that is focused on strengthening individual rights.
