• UNITE HERE conducted a weeklong strike at six Hyatt locations in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu, involving more than 3,000 hotel employees. While Hyatt agreed to wage and benefits similar to other agreements reached by hotels, UNITE HERE alleged that there were outstanding issues concerning treatment  of housekeepers and outsourcing, among other things. Hyatt stated that the union’s insistence on a card check agreement is the only reason there is no settlement.
  • California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, National Union of Healthcare Workers at Kaiser Permanente, and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 39 conducted limited duration strikes at 34 hospitals. The strikes, which included approximately 29,000 registered nurses and other hospital employees, were conducted at facilities owned by Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente, as well as the Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland, California were all related to disagreements over contract negotiations.
