Yesterday at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court the television personality Anthony McPartlin was sentenced to a remarkable £86,000 fine after pleading guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
McPartlin who was over two times the legal limit and was also banned from driving for 20 months.
District Judge Barbra Barnes told, “Because of the seriousness of this offence, the financial pain must be imposed on you as on any other offender”.
It is believed to be Britain's largest fine imposed on a drink-driver, as in previous years fines were capped to £5,000, but after recent changes to sentencing guidelines fines are now unlimited for serious offences and reflect an individual’s income.
When deciding on the appropriate sentence court’s will still take into consideration the financial means of an offender, as well as assessing the aggravating or mitigating factors of case.
Mr McPartlin’s fine was very high as it reflected his income, said to be in the region of £130,000 per week the court heard, as well as the severity of the incident which involved Mr McPartlin colliding with two other vehicles.
