In 2012, the Chinese patent authority SIPO received a total of 2,051,000 patent applications, up 26% over 2011. In terms of patent types, there were 653,000 applications for invention, 740,000 for utility model and 658,000 for design. The filings for invention increased by 24% year on year, of which domestic filings accounted for 81.9% at 535,000, up 28.7%, while filings from abroad for 18.1% at 118,000 up 6.2%. Grants of the three types in 2012 amounted to 1,255,000, rising 31% over 2011. The grant volume for invention, utility model and design stood at 217,000, 571,000 and 467,000 respectively, among which invention climbed 26.1%.

Meanwhile, China received nearly 20,000 PCT applications as an RO in 2012, with a slighter increase of 14% compared to the growth rate of 35.3% in 2011.
