• The former president of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers Local 6434, Tyrone Ricky Freeman, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of embezzling tens of thousands form his local union. Freeman, who maintains his innocence, is scheduled for arraignment on September 24, 2012. In 2008, the SEIU permanently banned Freeman from holding union office or membership and ordered him to make restitution of more than $1.1 million in misappropriated local funds. A lawsuit filed by the local in 2009 seeking to compel payment of that fine has been on hold in the Los Angeles County Superior Court of California pending the federal government investigation.
  • Kevin Clor, former general counsel of an IBT local for employees of the New York State Thruway Authority, was sentenced to up to eight years in prison for stealing funds from the union and ordered to pay over $160,000 in restitution. Clor had plead guilty to numerous counts related to his stealing $184,000 by falsifying expenses for professional education and legal reference materials.
