Following Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) hold lift, the Senate unanimously approved the Pipeline Transportation Safety Improvement Act of 2011 (S. 275) October 17. The legislation, introduced by Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), strengthens pipeline safety oversight by the federal government and addresses long-standing safety issues by reauthorizing and strengthening the authority of the Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration through fiscal year 2015. The following day, the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security held a hearing on pipeline safety since the San Bruno, CA accident.
