Consol Energy and Synthesis Energy Systems have formed a joint venture, Northern Appalachian Fuel LLC, which will build an $800 million coal-to-liquid plant in West Virginia. The plant would convert coal to both methanol and gasoline, with the ability to produce up to 100 million gallons per year of 87-octane gasoline. The companies are examining carbon capture and storage technology, although that is not included in the current cost of the plant. Consol’s senior vice president for external affairs Thomas Hoffman said, "We understand that [CCS] is an issue that is on everybody's mind, and it's on our list, too…….We don't know what the rules, if any, will be when the plant is built."
