The United Nations’ sustainable business initiative has published draft corporate water disclosure guidelines intended to make it easier to compare water management performance among companies.
Published at the ninth working conference of the U.N. Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate, the draft guidelines encourage businesses to report data including the percentage of withdrawals occurring in water-stressed areas, average withdrawal intensity in water-stressed areas and the number of significant water-related compliance violations. Companies are also asked by the guidelines to report risks related to water stress, whether company operations or products create adverse environmental impacts due to water use and wastewater discharge, and plans to improve water performance and reduce water-related risks and impacts. The U.N. Global Compact is seeking comments on the draft guidelines and plans to amend them in 2013 based on feedback from companies, stakeholders and others.
