The government shutdown had a significant impact on the CPSC. The CPSC announced only one voluntary recall during the first half of October, and only 23 of the commission’s 530 staffers remained on the job during the shutdown. And while consumers were able to submit reports to the SaferProducts.gov database during the shutdown, no reports were evaluated or published on the database during that time. It is unclear how long it will take the CPSC to catch up from the shutdown or how long it will be before the next voluntary recall is announced.
