Have you lodged your 2015 Annual Information Statement (AIS) with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC)?

It is important to remember that charities registered with the ACNC with a 31 December financial year reporting period were required to lodge their 2015 AIS with the Commissioner by 30 June 2016. 10,000 registered charities have now missed the 2015 AIS due date.

If your registered charity has a different reporting period, it must submit its AIS within six months from the end of its reporting period – e.g. if your charity’s reporting period is 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016, your statement is due on 30 September 2016.

Submitting an AIS to the ACNC each year is a legislative requirement of maintaining charity status, and if you fail to submit twice, your charity will become a double defaulter and the ACNC may move to revoke your charity status.

On 19 July 2016, the Commissioner released a statement that the ACNC has issued approximately 1,100 double defaulters with a notice of intention to revoke charity status. These charities have until 10 August 2016 to submit their outstanding Annual Information Statements. If they fail to do so, their charity status will be revoked, which will remove their entitlement to access Commonwealth charity tax concessions.

Registered charities can lodge their AIS through the Charity Portal on the ACNC website. Once registered charities have lodged their AIS, this information will be published on the ACNC register.
