February 16, 2009 - The FTC released its Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, which includes statistics on the 1.2 million consumer complaints submitted to the Commission in 2008. Of the 1.2 million complaints, 313,982 (26 percent) were related to identity theft. Of the identity theft complaints, 20 percent involved credit card fraud, 15 percent were related to government documents/benefits fraud, 15 percent involved employment fraud, phone and utilities fraud accounted for 13 percent, bank fraud comprised 11 percent of complaints, and loan fraud complaints totaled 4 percent.
