Sponsors can hire a Tier 2 (General) migrant worker for a position on the government's Shortage Occupation list without having to engage in a recruitment campaign to prove that no suitably qualified, EU resident worker is available for the position. Sponsors who can recruit migrant workers for positions on the Shortage Occupation list can save significant time, money and effort in filling these positions. The most recent of the periodic changes to the Shortage Occupation list came into effect on November 11. The government removed 29 job titles from the list and added 33 job titles to the list. Overall, the government calculates that the net effect of these changes is a reduction in the number of employment positions covered by the list. This continues a trend that has seen employment positions covered by the Shortage Occupation list fall from 1 million to 190,000 since 2008.
