The EU-US Privacy Shield Framework was designed by the Department of Commerce and the European Commission to ensure that entities that are engaging in cross-border transfers of personal data between the US and EU Member States, do so in compliance with European data protection laws. The EU-US Privacy Shield was deemed adequate for data transfers on 12 July 2016.

On 18 September 2017, the US Secretary of Commerce and European Commissioner Vera Jourova shall initiate a review process of the EU-US Privacy Shield which has been under significant pressure since its introduction. One anticipates that EU representatives shall seek clarity on US practices, namely the safeguards against bulk surveillance of personal data by US law enforcement agencies.
