As part of the move towards providing a secure and sustainable energy mix in the UK, the Government has launched a second consultation on the revised NPSs for energy infrastructure, inviting responses by 24 January 2011. The NPSs for energy infrastructure are key documents that will be used by the Infrastructure Planning Commission in determining applications under the system for planning consent under the Planning Act 2008 for major projects, such as nuclear power stations, large scale wind farms and national grid infrastructure developments. The Government has confi rmed that the IPC itself will be abolished in April 2012 when it will be replaced by the Major Infrastructure Planning Unit.
