The European Commission (‘the Commission’) has given the social partners until 31 December 2012 to agree the reform of the Working Time Directive.

EU working time rules are being updated to reflect the ‘changes in the world of work’. Discussions began back in December 2011, however there is little detail as to the content of the negotiations. If the social partners reach an agreement, the Commission will then present it to the Council as a Directive who can then either adopt it or reject it.

Based on previous experience, it appears there is still a long way to go before a final agreement will be reached.
