On 12 May 2014, the Department of Health released its long-awaited Final Report of the Review of Medicare Locals.  The Final Report (dated 3 March 2014, by Professor John Horvath AO) recommends, among other things, that the Government establish Primary Health Organisations tasked to integrate the care of patients across the entire health system with a view to improve patient outcomes.

On 13 May 2014, the peak body for Medicare Locals, the Australia Medicare Local Alliance, responded to the Final Report (noting, in particular, the failure of the Final Report to differentiate between the Primary Health Organisations model and what Medicare Locals are currently doing) and the Government's decision to abolish Medicare Locals by July 2015.
