The first meeting of the High Level Group on the Competitiveness of the Agro-food Industry was held earlier this summer. The group was formed by the European Commission to focus on competitiveness, innovation and safety in the food industry after a Commission report identified the competitiveness of the EU’s food industry is weak compared to that of the US and Canada, despite it being the world’s largest exporter and importer of food products.

The group’s aim is to identify and address the issues that determine the competitiveness of the agro-food industry so that a set of recommendations can be formulated to achieve a predictable and stable framework for future development.
