By means of Decree 54/2019, of 14 June 2019 (the "Decree"), the Council of Ministers' approved the Organizational Charter of the National Atomic Energy Agency (the "NAEA"), which shall act as the regulatory authority for the atomic energy sector.
Under the supervision of the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, NAEA shall be responsible for the supervision of activities from which may result radioactive emissions and radioactive waste, as well as ancillary activities related to the use of sources of ionizing radiation, materials, devices and radioactive substances, in all economic and social sectors, public and private alike.
In accordance to its Organizational Charter, NAEA shall be responsible for:
- the regulation and licensing of activities involving the peaceful use of nuclear energy or ionizing radiation, in all industries;
- supervising activities involving the peaceful use of nuclear energy or ionizing radiation and to maintain a national register of licensed entities and radiation sources;
- inspecting and evaluating activities and practices involving the peaceful use of nuclear energy or ionizing radiation; and
- cooperating with the governmental and non-governmental, national and foreign, entities in the exchange of relevant information and development of common policies for the sector.
The NAEA shall be headquartered in Maputo and represented at a local level by provincial delegations.
