It has been claimed that former chairman and president of China Mobile’s Chongqing branch, Mr Shen Changfu, accepted bribes totalling 36.2 million yuan (US$5.68 million) from major telecom-equipment makers, including Ericsson and Huawei, in return for equipment procurement contracts.

In 1996, Mr Changfu allegedly used his power as director of the Chonqing Telecom Bureau to ensure that Ericsson’s facilities were bought by the bureau in exchange for a 2% commission. He is also accused of taking advantage of his position at China Mobile to assist Huawei which took a significant number of telecom equipment orders from the China Mobile Chongqing Branch.

The court is still to issue a ruling.
