NRG Energy Inc. and Powerspan Corporation entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on November 2, 2007 to design, build, and operate the world’s largest commercial-scale CCS demonstration project at NRG's WA Parish Plant near Sugar Land, Texas. The project will utilize an ammonia-based solution to capture carbon dioxide from flue gas emitted from the plant. Once captured, the companies intend to sell the captured carbon dioxide for use in enhanced oil recovery operations in the Houston area. When it begins operations in 2012, the 125 MW capture facility is projected to capture for storage as much as one million tons of carbon dioxide per year.
