OFT has announced that banks have agreed to make charges on current accounts more transparent, and switching accounts easier. Banks will provide more, and clearer, information about charges. They will work to improve particularly problems consumers have when switching direct debits. These actions address two of OFT’s major concerns about the current account market, the third being on unarranged overdraft charges. OFT will comment further on this once the Supreme Court has issued its judgment. BBA said its members were happy to help but that its research showed people stay with their banks because they are happy with them, not because it is too hard to switch.
