The California Senate has passed a renewable energy bill which would require utilities in the state to acquire 33% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020, replacing the current standard that requires them to acquire 20% from such sources. The bill now goes to the California assembly for approval, where it is expected to pass.

The bill would give the force of law to an Executive Order signed by Governer Schwartzenegger in 2008.

The California Public Utilities Commission estimated in 2009 that implementation of the measure would require the investment of $115 billion in generation and transmission infrastructure.
