Well, here’s another reminder – courtesy of WaPo. It seems that the formerly crusading editor of a small town newspaper in Alabama – who “was being talked about as a potential contender for the Pulitzer Prize” decades ago, has “recently called for mass lynchings and suggested that the Ku Klux Klan should return to ‘clean out’ Washington.”
In an editorial he wrote recently, he said that it is “Time for the Ku Klux Klan to night ride again … Seems like the Klan would be welcome to raid the gated communities up there [in Washington].” He told WaPo that: “If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out D.C., we’d all been better off. … We’ll get the hemp ropes out, loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them. … [He] argued that the KKK “didn’t kill but a few people” and “wasn’t violent until they needed to be,” the Advertiser reported on Monday.
And now in a surprise twist – he just resigned, and it has been reported in The New York Times that the newspaper has “been turned over” to a new editor and publisher: a 46-year-old black woman who “started working at the newspaper only a few weeks ago as a clerk in the front office.”
The former editor said that “he stepped down because of his age,” and “did not apologize for the editorial about the K.K.K. ‘That’s what editorials are all about,’ he said. ‘To upset people, make them take action.’”
“Right now,” he said, referring to the KKK “I would consider them above the F.B.I. as far as being good guys.”
Huh? The KKK are the good guys??
Guess it’s back to the history books for him … or the daily newspapers.
