Here is a summary of the main changes taking effect on 1 October:

  • The new right to take unpaid time off to accompany a mother at up to two ante-natal appointments will apply to all employees who have a “qualifying relationship” with the mother. This extends to partners of the mother and fathers of the expected child.
  • The National Minimum Wage standard rate rises from £6.31 to £6.50 an hour. Other rates have also been increased, though by more modest amounts.
  • Employment Tribunals will have a new power to order an equal pay audit if an employer loses an equal pay claim. This will apply only to proceedings issued from 1 October onwards.
