In a damning report, the Electoral Commission has today determined that Vote Leave, the official campaign to leave the EU, committed serious electoral offences during the Referendum. Vote Leave has been referred to the Metropolitan Police by the Electoral Commission which has also imposed maximum fines.

Today’s report is exceptionally hard-hitting. It condemns the behaviour of Vote Leave officials throughout the investigation and finds that they knowingly overspent and then delivered false returns designed to disguise the overspending.

Contrary to recent claims by the chair of Vote Leave Matthew Elliott, the Commission found that Vote Leave did not co operate in the investigation, and its officers refuse to be interviewed. This failure was so serious that it led to separate fines being imposed at the maximum level available to the Commission.
