The government is consulting on EU proposals to enhance maternity rights.

The EU proposals are unlikely to require significant changes to the UK maternity regime - see our October e-bulletin. In its consultation paper the government seeks views on the proposals by 22 June 2009.

Meanwhile the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is recommending radical changes to parental rights over the next 10 years, to divide leave more equally between mothers and fathers and improve levels of pay. Further details are set out here.
