On 28 May 2013, EIOPA published a speech given by its Chairman, Mr Gabriel Bernardino, describing certain ways in which (in his view) EIOPA's role should be altered. Amongst other matters, he (a) confirmed his belief that EIOPA should be financed by an independent EU budget process or by fees collected from the insurance industry, (b) stressed that EIOPA should have increased powers to conduct inquiries into certain financial institutions and types of product/conduct, (c) commented that EIOPA's remit should be expanded to personal pensions and (d) remarked that EIOPA should have the capacity to prohibit/restrict certain activities.
