As part of the Affordable Care Act’s changes to HIPAA’s administrative simplification rules, controlling health plans — which include self-insured group health plans with receipts over $5,000,000 — are required to obtain a Health Plan Identifier (HPID) through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by November 5, 2014. CMS recently updated its FAQs regarding this requirement and clarified that health flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts are not required to obtain an HPID.
