A former United Steelworkers union official was arrested and charged with stealing union funds. The 29-count federal indictment charges David R. Sager of Ohio with embezzlement or theft from the union, mail fraud, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to law enforcement. The government alleges that Sager used his position to secure more than $185,000 from the union’s “strike fund.” 

IAM banned former president Frank Molina Jr. from holding any union position for a five-year period. Molina was suspended as president following a finding of a local IAM’s rules violations, including mass overspending and no proper approval of expenses. The IAM also met with FBI investigators regarding the local, District 70, which represents about 10,500 workers.

A Boston area former Teamsters secretary treasurer pled guilty to one count of attempted extortion of a Top Chef television crew, and he agreed to cooperate with the government against four co-defendants who are also facing charges. The case involves threats against a celebrity host during a picket that turned violent outside a Manhattan restaurant. United States v. Fidler et al.
