The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a public notice reminding licensees of the January 1, 2013 deadline for private land mobile radio services in the 150-174/421-512 MHz band (VHF/UHF) to migrate to narrowband technology.  The FCC’s public notice cautions licensees that they will be subject to possible sanctions if they operate in wideband mode after that date without a waiver, including license revocation and monetary forfeitures.  To the extent VHF/UHF licensees anticipate needing additional time to complete the narrowbanding of their systems, the FCC’s public notice provides guidance on the information that should be included in a waiver request.  The FCC strongly encourages licensees to file waiver requests as soon as possible, preferably before the end of 2011.
